Default Valve Adjustment

While I know it isn't that complicated to do, I don't really feel comfortable doing it. I got a quote from a performance shop which is listed below:

Valve adjustment labor (1.3hrs).... $123.50
Valve Cover gasket set..... $45.16

Seem reasonable?

They wanted to do the spark plugs for $80, and I said f@#k that. I can buy them for $37, so I will be doing those following the valve adjustment. This will wrap up a full maintenance for the recently turned 66k S.

Seems reasonable to me. I would ask for a sheet of all the before and after clearances and ensure they know the proper spec for the car.

That is insanely cheap. Our shop charges 3.0 hours for that service. Can it be done in 1.3 hours? Yes, but would I want a technician rolling through my valve adjustment to beat the time so he doesn't loose money. No way.

valve adjustment pricing seems very reasonable, I also agree with King. Asking them for a sheet with the current spec and new spec would be a great idea.

you can get 4 S2000 plugs for $37?

The price seems OK. It's not outrageous but I know a local reputable s2000 performance shop charges $100 for labor + new valve cover gasket. A mechanic familiar with the s2000 should be able to knock out the job in under an hour.

I do my own but the one mechanic I know here charges a little extra as the car has to sit in the bay for two hours to be completely cool before the adjustment is done.

You have to be a blind moron to not know the specs for valve clearance. If it's a stock car anyway, the numbers are clearly written on a tune up sheet under the hood. You open it, and it clearly states the clearance, and to measure it cold.

Ebay has them all day for around that much. The ones in the Honda box however, those are a little more.

The plugs have to come out to rotate the engine to adjust the valves. Plug change should just be the parts charge. Ask them for the plugs at their cost -- or the web price -- or adjust the valves in you driveway or garage. Dirt simple and probably less than an hour since it's highly unlikely too many will need adjustment.
