Default twisting shifter

not sure if this is where this belongs but i was removing my center console and realized that i had to take off the shift knob. thing is, it's glued on with blue loctite.
i was trying to force it but i noticed the shifter twisiting.

how much play is allowed on this thing? and any advice on how i should go about taking the knob off would be appreciated. thanks.

you need to move the nut under the shifter clockwise to unlock it while holding the shift knob. I think it is 14mm.

the nut is off already, that's why the shift knob is glued. but i realized i would have to use a lot of force to get this thing off and i was worried if twisting it really hard was my only option and if it would cause damage.

on mine (no loctite) it twists about 15 degrees (half an hour on the clock). It'll be better if you were to apply a sudden amount of torque (snap it) instead of a constant, increasing torque.

soo...i'm assuming the twisting will not cause any damage to the shifter. all this play it's giving me i assume is ok. i just didn't know if it would cause anything to bend or break.

Personally, I would hold the shifter shaft with a wrench or clamp of some sort (Maybe visegrips with some rubber gasket material to prevent marring if you're worried about cosmetics, though if you slide the boot down it shouldn't matter if you scuff it.
I'd do it that way before testing how much torque the shifter can take.

Heat that booger up with a hair dryer before attempting to loosen it.

If you twist too hard, you will break the rubber bond, and have a sloppy shifter.

Grab it with vise grips and hold it still while turning the knob.

When I was changing out my OEM knob for a vodoo I was worried about the play in the shifter as well....I just did a brisk twist and it came right off...However there was no loctite holding mine on...I would use the vicegrip option as mentioned above.

safe than sorry. thanks guys. sounds like it's gonna be a swell time for me. will the heat of a hair dryer make it anymore easier or how about a brisk drive to warm up the shifter?
