Default Turn key to off position, Engine "Shutters"

Anybody have some input on this? Whenever I come to a stop, and turn the ignition to the off position, the engine "shutters" right before turning off.
Almosty feels like I have a bad motor mount.

Is this normal?

Not to raise your fears, but I don't and have never had that problem. I did have some sort of vibration while the car was at idle, turns out, it was a broken engine mount. You might want to have them checked.

I had an MGB that shuttered when I shut it off and it turned out to be an ignition relay (damn Lucas electronics).

This is called "dieseling". It's when the engine is still hot enough and the compression is still strong enough for a few self-detonations to occur even though there is no spark.

The post on "dieseling" is correct

I also imagine it is a factor of balancing an engine to run 9000rpms. In order to balance it out at that high a frequency, the balancer has to give up a little bit below 1k rpms. Therefore, the engine actually goes out of balance as you shut it off causing the short vibration period.

High compression might also be a factor for the sudden shake when the engine stops.
