I had to replace an axle recently. I don't have a 36mm socket nor a decent impact gun. So I took it to my friends at a tyre place. Got the car back the next day and it cost me a case of beer.

These really can be a biatch to undo.

I was trying to undo on using a 4ft pole with me standing on the end.

I weigh about 180lbs, so that was 720ft/lbs torque and it still didn't budge.

Impact gun is the way to go for these bad boys

i broke a breaker bar before i took it down to my local tire store and they used a impact gun that is used for semi truck lugs to break it loose. took them a few seconds and it was free. just drive down to your local tire store with your center cap off and get that crap off of there.

I have used a SnapOn 1/2 impact and removed them. So the right tool for the job gets it every time.

But if a crank pully bolt takes a 4' 3/4" breaker bar, the axel nuts surely need impact.

make sure you are using impact gun rated adaptor(aka matte black finish), using hand tool socket and fitting with power wrench(or long breaker bar) could snap the poor thing in half, debris could fly off and hit you in the face.

my "nuts" never stand a change against my 600lb impact wrench

Well, my axle nuts didn't stand a chance against my $55.28. And my sanity was restored too...sorta.

You did remember to remove the locking pins BEFORE trying to remove them right?

There aren't any locking pins. There is a dent in the nut, but that is it. A good impact will remove them anyway. By hand, that is another matter. 220 Ftlbs takes alot to get started.
