Default Trouble starting 2.2 in ap1. Crank/cam pos sensor

Hi Guys,
I'm having trouble starting my car and I've traced it to the Crank Shaft Position Sensor (CKP). First off, the car is bit of a mutt:
  • 2002 Chassis
  • 2002 Intake Manifold & Throttle Body
  • 2007 F22C Engine (DBW)
  • 2004 ECU (Non-DBW)
If the car has been sitting for more than a few hours, it will crank and almost start, but usually fail. Unplugging the CKP or either camshaft sensor lets it always start easily, but limits the car to 3k rpm limp home mode. As a workaround, I'm able to start with any of those sensors unplugged, shut it off, and plug in the sensor. The car then starts normally and drives very strongly with no misfires, hesitation, or any other problems aside from a 9k revlimiter (something for another thread!).

I found someone with the same symptoms, however AFAIK (car was swapped before I bought it), my engine hasn't been taken apart and it runs strongly, so I doubt the cams are off by a tooth.

From reading this thread, I know the cam sensor and wheel changed in 2006 for the DBW cars, and they need to match each other. I believe (but am not sure) both of mine are from the 07 engine. Does the crank position sensor and wheel need to match the ECU as well? I'm thinking I may need to install the 2000-2006 (non-DBW) CKP sensor and wheel to match my 2004 non-DBW ECU and throttle body.

Also, are the camshaft position sensors different between 00-05 and 06+? Could that be my problem?

Thanks for any help!

Based on your troubleshooting steps, It sounds like the ECU needs to match the DBW engine/sensors.

the non-DBW cars have two cam sensors on the head; the DBW cars only have one if I remember correctly.

Hey, I think you are right. I saw this thread and his swap is the opposite (F20 in an 06) but his symptoms are the same.

On his car, with a crank sensor and wheel that match his F20 but not his 06 ECU, he gets a P0339 CEL. On mine, I can trigger a P0339 if I hold it around 50% throttle near 8000 RPM. As the revs climb, it'll slow down at 8000, like a soft revlimiter, and throw a P0339 after a few seconds. Full throttle lets me climb to 9000, which also triggers a P0339.

About the cam sensors, it looks like I have the old 2002 valve cover. I definitely have 2 TDC sensors instead of one.
