I showed a few people the bearings and the transmission and all seem to think its bearing faliure more than oil starvation..
In your original post you posted 2 pics of 2 different bearings.
2 bearings failing at once?
Its possible, not likely.

If you say "One failed causing the other to fail too" I would say "Also possible"
But I would add "There are more then 2 bearings in your transmission. Why didn't they fail?"

When I drained the oil out of my diff (with all new bearings and gears) there was a lot of metal goo on the drain plug and on the bottom of the drain container (after it settled)
That oil had been circulating in that diff for a 1000 km.
So breaking in diff gears would also cause bearings to fail?

Don't get me wrong.
I am on your side, you own an S2000
To say its bearing failure takes more then just looking at them.

From what i can tell and what everyone suggested the bearing above failed and the debris caused the scratches on the other one.
In the secondary output shaft in the final transmission there is only those 2 bearings (99% sure). The gearbox is seperate to this final shaft..

I'm not expert with the whole bearings issue.. but i'm going by what people in the business are telling me, and they are all telling me the same thing. (shrugs)

The gearbox is seperate to this final shaft..
But doesn't it use the same (debris contaminated) oil?

I'm no expert either (fair dinkum!)

Thanks to the "OIL JOURNALS" I have discovered that my Honda dealer sold
me the wrong differential fluid. I checked the receipt, called another dealer and asked them what vehicle used this fluid and they said it was for something else
not a S2000. I remember the bottle had pump fluid written on it but nothing
of GL5. I put this fluid in months ago and the warranty is now expired. Tomorrow
I'll see how this can be rectified. If I had let them change the fluid this may
never have been discovered. I wonder if that scraping sound is a result of this?
Thanks for your info guys.

heh... i stumbled across this thread today...

i actually had this same failure about a year ago:

https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showt...dpost&p=6291098

i seem to recall discussing it w/ Chris. this looks like it's appearing more and more as the S2000 fleet gets older, but hardly what i'd call epidemic.

I'm inclined to think this may be caused by running the trans low on oil, as it's one of the highest bearings in the trans. It's not submerged in oil, or oiled directly by the spray bar off the oil pump.

this is quite possible... my previous owner wasn't the best for fluid changes...

i have no doubt that a lesser oiled bearing could survive a long time w/ slowly degrading rollers that eventually become audible. and looking at the arrangement in my helms (after we talked about this the other night), i agree... the bearing isn't in the best place for lubrication.

dbzerk's bearing looks mighty familiar (same type of damage).

Hey Slows2k, Is it possible to change these bearings without removing the complete tranny just the tail end portion ?
