Transmission replacement

Transmission replacement
A 1 - 2 shift at about 7K resulted in a big bang and lots of clanging. 1st and 2nd are not usable but the clutch is ok and was able to use third to get home with some clutch slipping and liberal interpretation of stop signs. Once home I find that reverse still works and I can still use third.
I think opening the box would tax my mechanical ability so I just want to swap it out. There are some parts dealers online that have boxes at a wide range of prices (newer more expensive). My car is a MY'00 but I guess I could live with AP2 ratios if it shifts better and is not a problem to install.
So my questions are
- best source (price guidelines)
- best MY transmission
- install issues with AP2 box in an AP1
- your experience

ap2 box in an ap1 requires you to swap the tail shaft between the two, you gotta keep the ap1 on
i like ap1 ratios better but ap2 has stronger synchros
might as well replace the clutch while you are there

No need to swap tailshafts when changing to ap2 trans, just the drive flange on the back (bolts are different).
AP2 trans is nothing special. AP1 trans is just as reliable if driven properly.
Best source is used from s2ki from a trusted source.

Thus far have not seen any available transmissions here or locally.
Anyone have experience with autopartsfair that sells for the 'OEM Recycled parts' which I guess is salvage yard inventory. They claim parts are checked out and offer a year warranty but there is a lot of work to install a box just to find out it is not really usable.
Comments of this vendor or leads on a box are appreciated.

Any other contacts, even a trusted transmission mechanic in the Portland, OR. area might help.
Thanks.

So I bought a transmission out of decent looking '02 with 61K miles... looks like it had a light hit in the front and took a hit in the rear quarter in the same wreck. It is a gamble but the price was OK.
Car is up in Bellingham but they will pull and ship the tranny. I was surprised they have so many S2000's but he said they collect them as they can often come out selling just the seats.

Update...
I got the cheapest salvage yard box (from Gundies here locally) which is an AP1 box supposedly from an '02' and got it installed last week.
Now that I have driven it quite a bit I can say this is far and away a better box than the one that came with my new car. All shifts are well synchronized, it is quiet, and it consistent hot or cold.
When my car was new it would regularly grind on the 1 - 2 shift and Honda claimed it was a 'stacking tolerance' problem. Under warranty they replaced parts and it was better but not great. Later it started to slip out of fourth so more parts were replaced to stop that. I thought it was marginal but it worked for about 60K more miles until this failure.
I hate the expense, time, and labor but in the end the car is better than it was. I know it is a gamble but the salvage yard part was a winner for me.
