have you lowered the rear of the subframe at all? that is what i did to get to these bolts. once you have the subframe lowered enough to get the extensions at a perfect straight angle to the bolts you should be good to go. if that doesn't work try using some 1/2" extensions, those should get you better leverage. when you are lowering the subframe, please be EXTREMELY CAREFUL as to not let the subframe fall on you. (obvious) if you can, be sure to have a jack or jack stands under the subframe as a safety net.

i just took my trans out myself in my garage on jackstands so i know it can be done. it just takes some determination. if you find yourself getting frustrated, take a break and try again. good luck!

Get yourself a 24-inch breaker bar. That puppy didn't have any problem either time on my car.

Go to Harbor Freight and get an electric impact wrench:

What I did was access one of the bolts from under the hood after the subframe was lowered. The others you'll need a lot of extensions + a helper + breaker bar

i do not believe it is possible to do this job without lowering the subframe because you won't have access to the upper bolts if you don't lower it.

being an alignment tech i would recommend getting an alignment afterwards. the reason being you are moving suspension parts when you lower the subframe and you may bump some alignment angles out of spec. also i believe in the service manual it says to disconnect the steering shaft/knuckle in the engine bay which allows you to lower the subframe without damaging the steering shaft. that alone would require an alignment imo. i would get it aligned afterwards just for a piece of mind so that i know everything is good to go.

as for the electric impact gun, it probably won't work unless you have a REALLY strong gun because with all those extensions required to reach the bolts the gun will lose most of its torque. i have a nice snap on electric impact gun and while it works really well to remove wheels and the like, its not so good for the job at hand.

like the others have said, a nice size breaker bar and some 1/2" extensions should do the trick. i did mine with a normal length 1/2" ratchet attached to some 3/8" estensions. keep at it and don't give up. once you get it done its a pretty satisfying feeling knowing you did the work. again, good luck!
