Transmission - Rebiuld or Replace?

You're "counting" of a second when shifting with the AP1 has nothing to do with the fact it was an AP1

ap2 trans ftw. I let a buddy drive my car and he was blown away with the ap2 trans. on the ap1trans I always had to count 1mississippi when shifting to second or grind. with the ap2 as long as the fluid is clean and up to temp the car shifts beautifully

well I didn't buy it new but I have to think the carbon synchronizes help with shifting at high rpm its not the only s2000 I have driven . I've been behind the wheel of quite a few and the ap2 trans just shifts better not all ap1 trannys are bad but there is a noticeable difference I didn't pull it out of thin air.

Were you there? Many early S2000's had shifting problems noted by owners, magazines, and acknowledged by Honda and dealers. Straight from the factory without any abuse.
Honda claimed it was a 'stacking tolerance error' with transmission assembly, issues a TSB, and worked on transmissions under warranty. In my experience the results were poor and many early AP1s shifted poorly and it was blamed on drivers rather than Honda. I know of several buyers of '00 cars that ditched them over the issue.
Honda claimed my transmission was repaired but it was crap compared to later models. I replaced it with one from an '02 and it now performs properly with the car being driven the same way for almost 15 years.

Yeah, well....could be. A TSB was issued for grinding into 2nd. That's the only one I know of. Vast majority was fine. I pretty much read every magazine article ever on the car, don't remember any mentioning it.

The press is careful when commenting on a flaw from a favored brand... it was usually was stated as 'the example we tested had a little catch when shifting into second at high rpm'.
They don't say it constantly grinds going into second once the box is hot which combined with the buzzing clutch gives a genuine bucket of bolts impression.
I promise you early cars very often had flawed transmissions to go with the flawed clutches.
