Transmission pops out of first gear with a loud thunk
hi everybody,
this could very well be something i'm causing but i'm not sure...
every once in a while, as i start moving from a stop, the car will pop out of first gear (probably around 2-3mph) by itself. when it does this, it makes a REALLY loud clunk. pretty scary actually. it might be me not pushing the shifter all the way into first, i'm not sure. my question is... aside from putting the car fully into first gear, is there anything else i should be concerned about? should i get it checked out by a mechanic?
thanks!

My '04 has done the same exact thing.
It seems as though I've narrowed it down to either not fully putting it in 1st or resting my hand on the shifter in such a way as to cause the shifter to pop out of gear. It's happened on 2 occasions since I got the car 9 months ago. It hasn't done it since I noticed the aforementioned details (few months), and it only ever happened in 1st gear.

I have an '04 also and mine was popping out of 3rd gear not 1st, 2nd or 4th. I fixed my problem by rebuilding the transmission. My problem was worn shift forks and worn syncros. I replaced the bearings while I was in there for good measure but probably didn't really need to. I wrote a DIY on the job in this forum. HTH
