I do mine every driving season. It's a bit of overkill as I only drive about 3k miles per season, but at 11 years old my tranny still drives like new.

That is the theory with my 94 T Bird. It developed a characteristic shuddering in 2/3rd gear at moderate loads. Draining the trainy on the thing is a pain, have to line up the torque converter etc, so I just took it to my regular mechanic as he has the machine to replace fluid while running so no old fluid is left behind anywhere. Flushed, replaced all of it, 15qts worth of MerconV and boom! Problem solved immediately. The new fluid worked wonders but once again, some mechanics have this superstition about "old" fluid.
