Default Transmission Fluid Change

Hi guys. I want to do a tranny fluid change on my 2002 s2k with 96k on it because i don't know if the previous owner did one. I asked around and i got conflicting answers. Some people say do it while others say that don't because they say, since i don't know if the previous owner did one that i should not touch it because my car has high mileage. They say that changing fluid can lead to a transmission failure because any gunk or buildup from years of neglect can become a part of your transmission by keeping it together somehow, and by flushing that out for clean fluid you are taking away a vital part of your transmission that is keeping it running properly.

So i want to know your guys opinion on it.

I've only ever heard this myth in association with automatics. The theory is that as the transmission fluid stays in and ages, more and more friction material grinds off into the oil, which creates more friction, and more grinding, until all of the material in the oil is the only thing keeping the clutch pack from slipping. Old oil gets replaced with new oil and suddenly the transmission starts slipping because there's no friction material in the oil anymore.

Manual transmissions don't work like that. Change your transmission fluid as soon as possible and it will feel worlds better.

Never heard of that before. Not one person on here will tell you to not change your tranny oil. It's a quick and easy job and guaranteed you will notice a positive difference

An automatic tranny may have more places to get clogged
If any sediment is disturbed with a flush

i change my transmission oil once a year even though my car hasnt seen 5k miles this year. im pretty sure oils break down even when not used. i think Amsoil recommends 50k or 6 months which ever comes first. i always do the diff and transmission together. its a cheap insurance to keep your car healthy.

Lots of DIYs on the forum. Change it. I would only add that you change it when it (transmission- not just the engine) is warm. Drain it as soon as you can after driving to keep any material that may be suspended from settling out. Billman recommends that for all fluids if you can. Makes sense.

Firstly....Welcome aboard! You can do no wrong by changing your lubricants. Anyone saying otherwise is wrong. Great info in Under the Hood/FAQ/......
You will soon be chiming in as to Honda MTF, Amsoil, Redline, Mobile 1 (diff fluid). The key is keep it clean and change it regularly. Pick any name brand and you will go far.
