Glad I saw this thread, in the last few weeks I noticed my car making a light thump when I let out on the clutch and the drive shaft engages the diff. If I feather the clutch out and give it more gas it seems to not happen. Im hoping its just normal with a diff that has 120K on it.

My original diff blew, this diff had 100K and I installed it at 104K. I use Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90 and the used diff has always been a bit whiny and now does this slight clunk. I have stiffer after market mounts too with the used diff so maybe that's why I hear noise. The fluid is due for a change soon so the condition of the fluid and the drain bolt will tell me a lot. but Amsoil is such a good product I don't expect to see much wear..

Back from the dead again. I seem to have a similar issue. I was under the car, had it in gear and had a friend hit the gas and let go. The sqeuaking or "pop pop pop" "rattling" noise only really happens when decelerating with clutch engaged (disengaged or in neutral, the noise is not as loud but still there when car was moving). I isolated the sound coming from the front of the drive shaft right behind the "joint" where it's connected to the transmission. When the car is in gear and i hit the gas there is absolutely no noise, it's only when i let go of gas i hear the terrible noise. Seems like when there is energy traveling from engine to wheels, no noise; when no energy (shaft freely spinning from inertia) or energy traveling from wheel to engine is when there is noise or popping/rattling.

I have a video of the sound when driving the car if it helps.

So question. Obviously and probably the driveshaft is the culprit. What i dont' understand what is making that noise? Isn't the driveshaft a one piece with no bearings, spinning or moving parts; of course the driveshaft itself spins but why would it make rattling pop pop pop and sqeaking noise? Someone mentioned rebuilding or regreasing. Regrease rebuild what? Does the driveshaft disassemble? isn't it just one hollow pipe with plates on the end to bolt onto tranny or diff?
