Transmission Buzz TSB Warranty Goodwill Considerat

That godawful buzzing/rattling noise (typically as you decellerate from about 4500 rpm down to about 3500 rpm) is caused by the springs in the center of the clutch disk.
I couldn't stand it any longer by about 35k miles (car was 5 years old by then). I replaced only the clutch disk, some grease, and a couple of those special cable ties that are made to plug into holes in the bodywork. Flywheel, pressure plate, etc. were OK. I'm at about 65k miles now and all is still well.
But your experience may vary. Be aware that if you don't replace a clutch part and it fails you get to do the job over again. That's not too bad if you can drive another car to work while you repair the clutch; if you have to fix the clutch immediately so you can go to work tomorrow, that's a bit more pressure.

The buzz on decel is caused as the transmission sets up harmonics that rattles the the springs in the friction disk. Honda redesigned the friction disk that does a good job of reducing the noise.
Beware that some after-market friction disks use the original design hub that will make as much or more noise than the original. The OEM FD you buy today controls noise well although a FD with a solid hub (not recommended for the street) is probably even quieter.
My car was terrible with a 'bucket of bolts' noise that was effectively muted with a new clutch.

The noise has not returned since I replaced the clutch disk.
Mine sounded like the worst-built pos that GM ever slapped together in their darkest hour. Everyone who rode in the car asked what was wrong with it.
