I changed to GM Synchromesh last night. I think this stuff is going to be the miracle juice. It shifts smoother than the OEM oil whether it is cold or hot.
While I was under there, I did notice that the exhaust gets as close as 1/4 inch from the tranny, and travels about 2~2.5 feet without being more than 3 inches from it. If this new oil doesn't fix the grind, I may try to make a heat shield.

I thought Redline was the "miracle juice" until the tranny let go in my Prelude. I had nothing but trouble with it after a while.
StwoK, a piece of .040 sheet metal will work just fine. You can get it and a set of snips from Home Depot or Lowes. Basically, take a look a the battery heat shield- you just want something with some tabs to mount to something under the car and bend/cut it so that it fits in the area.
I kind of agree with Chris, though- if heat is a problem, it is likely internal heat and not so much the exhaust. Feel the other side of the trans when you get done with a drive- they are both smoking hot.
