tranny
ok, my tranny has been grinding on me for the past 3 months, i've been driving it by pausing rite before i enter 3rd. i haven't had the time to fix it yet, but i do now.
well my problem is the tranny grinds when it enters into thrid from 1st or from 2nd.
i am not sure what the problem is, but my guess is the tranny is shot.
well i was hoping that you guys would be able to tell me the best solution for this.
i had heard about rebuilding the tranny (3rd gear sync) or buying a new tranny.
are these the only two options? and if so which is the more cost efficient method?
i am thinking about selling the car.
(would it be better to try selling the car w/the tranny grind? or would it be better to fix it then sell it?)

Well, If I test drove a car with a bad grind, I'd probably want 2-3K off whatever the going price is. Used trannies are from $800-1200 US. It might be interesting to tear into one and replace the synchro's.

How do you know it's the syncros that's causing this? Although by the fact that you skipshift (1st to 3rd), you may have indeed wrecked the syncros, this is not a proven fact that they are gone.
Have you had anyone else drive the car? Maybe it's your shifting technique that grinds that gear. How's your clutch fluid? How's the clutch operation? Is it grabbing at the proper point and does it have the proper free play at the bottom and at the top? Maybe it's a clutch or clutch fluid problem.

I imagine I could change the synchro's but, I've been inside a couple honda trannies already. If you're a noob, you'd probably just F the tranny up worse.
I would listen to X though. It might be a clutch problem and not tranny.

so a clutch problem would cause the grind every time i shift?
would a clutch problem cause a grind going from 1 to 3, or from 1, 2, 3?
I can down shift from 4, 5, 6 without a grind, but any upshift to 3 grinds.
I haven't checked of the fluid level yet. (i'll check your DIY list to get the directions on this.)
I know it can't be my shifting, I tired shifting slowly and i also tried it making sure the clutch was pressed all the way down. Plus i have had some other people drive the car and it still grinds.
so then if i took it apart, is it a simple replacement (nuts and bolts)
or is it a frabication/proper measurement replacement type of change?
by the way thanks for your replies. (i'll check the level today)

A "clutch problem" can encompass the actual clutch itself (very expensive to deal with and not an easy @home job) or a clutch hydraulic situation where the clutch is not fully disengaging even though you have your "foot to the floor".
A leak in the system can be the culprit or air in the system can also have a detrimental affect on the way the clutch operates. If you have a leak (an internal one won't show itself with oozing fluid that you can find easily) or air, you may notice a low fluid level in the reservoir. A change and flush of clutch fluid would be a good beginning, especially if you've never had it done in a long while.
As a side note: Going from 1 to 3 is called "skip shifting". This is widely recognized as a bad thing to do. This will promote syncro wear and deterioration, which can, in turn, lead to more grinding.
A clutch problem usually will aggravate the grinding in ALL gears. However, since it is possible to shift without the use of a clutch by perfectly rev-matching, a clutch problem may simply be pointing toward poor shifting technique as an added issue.
