Too much or too little?

The dip stick hits the oil at a slight angle, so the lower side showing on the dip stick is the side of the stick that is facing up when it hits the oil. The difference is minimal enough that you're not going to see huge differences - if you're about a half quart low, you'll see it on both sides of the dipstick more or less.

The dipstick is a gauge for oil There are four marks between high and low, or full and add, depending on the dipstick. The range from full to add is 1 quart and is the manufacturer's range for cold oil to fluctuate and still be in operating parameters. If you are "one x down", you are one quarter quart from the top end of the range, but anything between low and full is acceptable range.

If you are below that range, yes, add oil, and keep an eye on the oil pressure light - running low oil runs the risk of no oil pressure and that can ruin the engine. As well, less oil reserves means hotter oil that becomes less effective and doesn't last as long. If you are over the full mark, you need to be careful because you could have so much oil that the crank is dipping into it and whipping the oil up. This will create froth and that can kill or damage an engine as well.

I've seen AP1s burn through half a quart in 2 hours of hard driving, so its somehing you need to stay on top of with the F20 engine.

Main thing is, stay between the high and low marks, err on the side of high, don't overfill too much, and with an AP1, check your oil at every gas refill. I don't think you caused any damage, just stay on top of your oil level going forward.
Saki, I think the OP is talking about oil transfer from the dipstick tube. Sometimes you'll get a reading thats 2x's or more higher than the other side due to transfer from the dipstick tube. Thats the WRONG reading. always take multiple measurements and take the lowest measurement as the actual reading.
