Billman250, you rock.

I read the first part of this thread (or one like it) and priced a new TCT at the stealership ... $195! That got me to reading more on the subject, and I read your idea about sandblasting the worm gear. Well, I always wondered why I brought a cheapie sandblaster with me when I moved from Hawaii to DC. I've never used it in the 14 years I've had it. I didn't even have blasting media for it. So, I threw a handful of play sand through the screen and used that.

The result is amazing. My car had been an embarrassment at idle. Someone actually asked me if it was a diesel. Now, all you can hear is the suck from the Rotrex supercharger. Amazing. A zero cost repair, in 30 minutes.

Billman250, you have a fan in Northern Virginia.

I do not understand how the bolt trick works to keep the piston in. Why is the bolt needed and how would the washer work. I assume if I took it apart, I would understand the mechanics with one simple look but the pics don't do justice to me. Also, What parts are you taking off to apply the bolt from the outside of the tensioner housing?

I have changed my TCT once before and I would love to attempt the sandblasting way this time around to save money.

The 5mmX.8 bolt with nut (and washer if desired) threads into the piston through the oil jet port (removed with flat tip screwdriver). See ljsimp's post with pics on previous page. It retracts the piston so you can install after sandblasting the wormgear. Once you have the TCT properly installed and torqued into position you just remove the 5mm bolt and nut and the piston extends to provide proper tension on timing chain. Then reinstall the oil jet and cap. I never even removed the inspection/maintenance plug.

i am thinking about doing this, but am not sure if it is my TCT making the noise...around 40k miles upon start up my car made the "card stuck in bike spokes noise," but it would go away once the car was started and in idle. it wouldnt make any noise driving and the car sounded normal. it only does this every now and then, but recently when it did it, it lasted a little longer and kept doing it as i reversed, but then went away when i started driving. it has been a few days since i heard it, but im sure it will happen again. i used to think it was just a heat shield or something shaking from the car starting up and getting into idle. i wanted to go investigate to see if i could figure out what it is, but after hearing about this issue i am thinking it might be the TCT. still not sure though? any ideas?? i only hear this every now and then and the noise usually lasts a few seconds at start up....
im having the same problem 25k miles 03 here driving me crazy might be the TCT i guess

Kinda hard to tell in your vid.

got your PM. Your dealer, like most, is completely incompetent. The CEL will not come on when its time to change the TCT.
