I just finished sand blasting my worm gear with a little portable sand blaster I got from Harbor Freight for like $15. It cost more for the sand to blast it with (I paid $24 for the Aluminum Oxide 20lbs.) So for less than a third of the cost of a new one, my TCT now works as it should once again, and I have the leftover aluminum oxide and blaster to do it again many times if needed. It seems that about every 70,000 miles or so on my car the TCT would go bad; this one is a warrantee replacement.
I just used the 5mmX.8mmX50mm bolt and nut to retract the plunger (clockwise retracts) after sandblasting the wormgear, before installing and tightening the mounting bolts. Once the mounting bolts are torqued to spec. then I just removed the 5mmX.8 bolt and nut, reinstalled the oil jet, then reinstalled and torqued the cap to spec. I never even took the maintenance plug out. Worked great. Thanks Billman250!!!
Thanks for the Idea. Picked one up today. After hooking the sand blaster up to the compressed air and adding some of the media to the tank, it took 30 seconds to blast it.

I guess this is a good time to clean up my shovels and picks and so on.

i did it last night using coarse emery cloth. we will see how it goes. next time, i will just use a bolt to retract the piston rather then dealing with the maintenance hole/removing pin thing. seems much easier and i would not need to deal with taking the airbox off.

Yep quick and easy. I just clamped my worm gear in a vise with shop towels in between vice and wormgear. Then turned the worm gear as needed to get to next "shiny" section to blast it.

I just replaced my tensioner for the second time in the 80k miles I have put on my S2000. I have always used mobile 1 and made a change back to Dino oil, hopefully it makes a difference long term.

Bahhh I haven't driven the car in a while, and I come back to that fun ticking sound. Also been running Mobil 1 for the past 5xxx miles or so. Coincidence? Sigh...

Don't replace, rebuild it.
