Timing Chain Tensioner Noise
#393
It isn't that big of a noise. More like metal hitting metal from a short drop/distance. The spring isn't THAT strong. You should be fine as long as you pulled the pin without dropping it inside.

I just replaced my second tensioner.
The first one went out at about 27,000mi and I replaced it at 32,000mi.
The second one went out at 40,000mi and I just replaced it at 42,000mi.
We need the new and improved TCT prototype just in case this happens again.

I just bought a MY04 about two weeks ago with 45 and some change on the clock. I'm extremely paranoid when it comes to noises, so anything I hear I investigate it completely or it haunts me at night. I think I have this noise, however its not prominent. I can definitely hear some rattling at idle, and if I manipulate the throttle from under the hood, i hear a slight ticking. Is this just valve noise? I have a buddy with an 02 and he told me that they are just noisy motors and chalk itup to that. He's got about 60k on his and hasn't had to change one yet. Also I have an extended warranty, with an appointment to have it looked at on Thursday to get my front brakes changed (two weeks and the front inside pads are scoring the rotors, bastards, at least within the first 30 days they cover it ) I plan on bringing the timing chain tensioner up, and hopefully (they better) change it.
If you do need a timing chain tensioner would you be able to hear it at idle or after a couple thousand revs, right at startup? Is this noise not loud enough to hear unless you're under the hood? (sorry for the long post, I wanted to give all the details.)

Thanks that helps, so I could very well need it replaced then. How about anyone else? Was the noise prominent all the time (with the hood closed driving around) or only when you were under the hood to listen to it?
