Looks like it's my turn... dealer told me to replace my TCT when I asked them what the rattle was during the 60K service... definitly the card/spoke thing.

My problem is that they want $975 to fix this. $175 for the part and 8 hours of labor. This doesn't jive with the pictures earlier in this thread. 2 dealers have told me it requires pulling off a good part of the front end of the engine... radiator, AC, water pump...

How are the rest of you getting this done in 15 -20 minutes? What am I missing?
8 hours??? That's bullshitting to the highest order! Or maybe they have the most incompetent fools working there and require 8 hours to study the manual in order to replace it.

My dealership replaced it for free under the extended HondaCare warranty at 80k miles and it took them less than 30 minutes.

Here's what you do: tell them to call the Honda Technical Assistance Line for dealers. They need to learn about this problem, to get some advice about what is a common issue with S2000s.

My dealer wanted to do a 4-hour "engine tear-down" to diagnose things. God knows what they would have messed up on the way, and then there's always the cost of the inevitable build up. Some dealers have no exposure to our car and its problems.

If they won't call Honda, you should. Honda was very helpful when I talked to them after the fact. They said that the dealer should have called them, and then they repaid the cost of the TCT part which I had replaced myself. The Honda number is (800)999-1009.

If I were to do the TCT replacement again, I could do it in 10 minutes by using a pair of needle-nose pliers with a 90-degree bend to grab the release pin. Then I would not even have to move the air cleaner box.

Maybe you should print out the DIY guide from here and take it to the dealer ...

That's what I thought at first... but I called 3 dealers and the quotes were $800, $828, and $975. I really feel like I'm missing something! It's always parts + 8 hrs labor. Why does the book say 8 h labor?

SJT -- thx so much for the suggestion. The dealer has been a PITA about this so I called Honda directly. Sure enough, they said TCT replacement was <1h. So I called the dealer. They tried the "maybe they were looking at the TCT arm (?) or another part" arguement. So I gave them the reference # for my call.

Anyway, looks like you saved me ~ $700. THANKS!

They are likely quoting the wrong job.

The ONLY thing that needs replacment is the part # 14510-PCX-005.

I've got it down to 3 minutes, if that gives you an idea of what's involved.

I'd say 1hr is fair book time to charge. NO MORE.

Here's a pic of a bunch of junk TCTs

I am not a mechanic and I just did my 4th one (36K miles on my baby) in 6 mins including walking down stairs, finding the right socket etc...

You do not need to pull anything off to replace it, especially if you have after market intake.

Are you guys doing the part with the screw/nut to retract the TCT piston before pulling it out? That's always the part that takes me the longest.

I never retract it first, as a new one is always going in it's place. Even if I was going to re-use it, I'd retract it on the bench later.

I never heard back from the dealer today -- part is on order. I'm pretty sure they're incompetant since their first reaction was to accuse me of not keeping up with my oil changes.

Any of you guys live in Oregon? I'd pay any of you $100 just so I didn't have to give the service to the dealer.

I really appreciate this forum/the feedback -- thanks!!!!!
