i would assume that if the TCT was faulty...

you would hear the noise 100% of the time...
No, it would depend on what stage in failure it is. The first one of mine that failed just had a little flutter just above idle. If I was sitting at idle, or when I was cruising, I couldn't hear it. But, the longer I went, the more consistent the problem was. Eventually, I heard it all the time, regardless of what RPM I was at.

[QUOTE=mxt_77,Jun 13 2007, 08:13 AM]15W-50 definitely doesn't sound right for this engine.

Have this noise.

'05 S2000 26k miles
Mobil 1 5W-30 since first oil change, normally go 7-8k miles per change, no oil burn at all even during that extended change interval.

Sound only occurs audibly from 1400-2000ish rpm when I have been flogging the car.

Only thing I can think is the oil thins out as it's very hot and causes this noise. When I am easy on the car (not very often), I rarely hear the noise. Always check oil level and as mentioned above engine burns zero oil.

I've never heard of 15W-50 causing engine problems. Is it a real danger? I thought a lot of the people running superchargers or turbos used 15W-50, as recommended by the super/turbo manufacturer. Billman250 talked about one of his customers that had been running 15W-50 with a supercharger for years with no engine or TCT problems.
Cars of today have tighter tolerances than cars from years ago. The Owners manual recommends 10w-30 motor oil. Some other Honda cars come from the factory with 5w-20 motor oil.

15w-50 might be good for a larger displacement, high horsepower engine with a super charger or a turbo charger on a hot sunny day.

The engine in the S2000 has tight enough tolorances, that the engine doesn't need anything thicker than something like 5w-40. I personally run 5w-30 all year round.

It rarely gets really cold here in Georgia, and when it does I don't don't drive the S2000, so I've gone with 10w-30 (instead of 5w30), and have no regreats. Car still uses zero oil between 3,000-4,000 mile change intervals.

I guess my car submitted to the 1 in 10 odds. The sound is never present during cold start ups, but makes the card-in-spoke noises intermittently during warm start ups. The sound however never varies w/ RPM and only makes the noise during warm start ups.

This is obviously an indication of the TCT exacerbating, right?

Come to think of it, I heard this noise for the first time couple months ago and thought it was normal until I stumbled upon this thread..
