I'm going to start pushing my in-warranty TCT customers into the dealer to get it rolling.

i have this whirring noise at idle but it's not constant i'm wondering if this could be it. I guess changing it won't hurt anything even if it's not the problem. The motor only has 30k on it.

Thanks, that would be great. I know you've already replaced a lot, so I expect you'll see many more. If you're willing, for the ones that are out of warranty, you might have them get in touch w/ American Honda Cust. Service and discuss getting it replaced under their goodwill policy.

I just wish there was a way to bring Honda's attention to this simple flaw. It doesn't seem like something that should be particularly difficult to resolve. And it's not like I'm asking for them to have a recall on the part or something... just update the design so that when I replace my 3rd one, it'll be the last time I have to replace it.

so my car made the usual startup noise twice in a row, but didn't start either time (freezing temps). I haven't touched it since. Is something (other than the tensioner) broken? Is it safe to start again (I'd like to move the car to a different location for the install)? I just got the new one in yesterday so I'll be installing it today.

oh yea, and about the required tools, what is a T-50 Hex?

It's not a T-50, it's an 8mm or 5/16 hex for the maintenence plug.

The TCT is not causing your starting issues.

Yea, I figured that out after a couple of trips to Lowe's.

Definitely NOT what I wanted to hear. Maybe the starting was just due to the cold weather and the tensioner was a separate problem. I don't see any damage to the original TCT, should I?

You won't see anything visually.

Any car will crank slower in the cold. Crank it for a good 5-7 seconds, no throttle. If it doesn't start, then start troubleshooting.

I had mine replaced in May by the dealer. It cost me about $200, but I didn't feel like doing it myself. Last week I had it replaced again, at their expense. They told me that they checked with Honda, and that the issue is caused by a stretched timing chain caused by incorrect oil, low oil or driving habits! If it happens again they say the the timing chain and guides will need to be replaced. I check my oil at least once a week, always use Mobile 1 10W-30, and yes I do vtec it just about every day. I didn't think timing chains could stretch.

Has anyone else heard this from Honda?

Sounds like crap to me. Faulty product design is the cause here.

Mine is really starting to go bad now, time for another $115 piece. Man this is frustrating. Im actually debating at this point whether to get another S2000 just solely because of this issue.
