Default Timing Chain Guide and Tensioner Arm Maintenance?

Do the timing chain guides and tensioner arm ever need replacing?

I just had to replace a brand spanking new OEM TCT after a whopping 3000 or so miles. This seems crazy even after reading about how often people have to replace them.

A mechanic friend of mine suggested that the plastic guides are usually the first thing to wear on most cars. Yes I know the s2000 is one of the farthest things from a normal car. The TCT only lasting 3000 mi. might make sense if the guides are not as thick as they once were.

Misc details:
- 02' with 106k miles
- Was running Mobile 1 10W-30(Burned 4qt in 5000 miles), just changed to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 10W30, hoping to slow oil consumption.
- The worm gear from the "new" TCT I pulled out was worn smooth on the bottom 3 "threads".

Should have followed the advice here in these threads and replaced it with Billmans and be worry free for life.

I got myself a mini sand blaster gun so it didn't cost me a whole new TCT, just the cost of the sand blaster and blast media. I was just thought 3000 miles seems crazy, and I wanted to make sure it wasn't something more complicated that contributed to the early demise of my TCT.

Sandblasting is the only approved home method. It doesn't always work or last (can come back in a few weeks) but it does not harm the worm gear. That video should be trashed, any type of hand sanding or dremeling ruins the worm gear and causes pressure loss.

Billman, do you offer an improved product over the OEM one? I want to prevent any possible mishap, if possible

if a new oem tensioner is "failing" that quickly then you need a new timing chain.

You don't need a timing chain if an OEM tensioner "fails" in a day (and this happens). They are design flawed plain and simple.
