Default Timing Chain

Hi guys,

I recently took my car into a Honda garage to get it checked over as it was making a rather annoying ticking noise when stationary. The mechanics said the timing chain needed changing and quoted me around

order a timing chain tensioner and tell them to change that. that should solve your problems. the part should cost you like 100 +or- of your lbs. and they should charge you 0.5 to 1.0 labor hours. or if you look up a diy on it you can probably change it your self

Cheers mate.

Would that actually fix the problem though as I have read its only a tempory fix and will reappear in a month or 2? Honda told me it was the actual chain that is the problem. As it is really loose from been run on no oil from previous owner???

how did they determine that the chain was stretched?
the tensioner is a "temporary" fix until the tensioner fails again in a few years or how ever long it decieds to last.

Not sure to be honest I assume they were guessing as they didnt strip the engine or anything.
Is it unlikely that the chain is stretched, as I am sure it cant be as bad as they have made out? Its only done 44,000 miles and had a service every year.

Where can you buy the tensioners from?

Just for info, I had a rattling cam chain at idle and had the chain tensioner replaced a couple weeks ago.
The rattling has gone completely. The part cost me

WOW, time to find a new honest mechanic or do this yourself...I cant imagine he'd tried to con you for that much money. That is about $6k US dollars there for a easy repair!

Good luck with this, and always try to get more opinions, the more the better...

I doubt it was a con, more like uninformed. Low oil isn't going to stretch that timing chain, cause lots of other problems, but not the timing chain .

You replace the timing chain tensioner with a 10mm socket and long needle nose pliar on the side of the street .

The ticking noise you hear is classic tensioner starting to fail.

yep tct, order the part and follow the diy with pics on this site, i did it in 25 minutes and most of that was letting the engine cool, the mechanics probably not aware of this car in particular
