Ticking noise during idle
Hey guys,
During idle (~1k rpm), I start hearing this weird tapping or clicking sound. I'm completely stumped as to what is causing it. It doesn't really start sounding until about 4-5 seconds after the engine drops down to idle. I've noticed it before, about 6-ish months ago, but I think the cold weather is making it more audible for some reason. Valve adjustment was done about a year ago, maybe a little less. Sound is only audible from the cabin, I tried to pick up the sound from the engine bay but it's probably masked by all the other engine noise. I'm pretty sure it's not TCT noise. Video was shot after driving home from work, so engine was warm.

Set to public. Also, the noise seems to be louder if it's colder out. I've tried to pinpoint the source in the engine bay and I just can't hear it. Everything sounds pretty normal outside the cabin...

How did you rule-out timing chain noise? Sounds like it could be the chain, from the video.

I'm leaning toward it not being the TCT because I cannot locate the noise from near the TCT, or anywhere from the engine bay for that matter... It's weird. I will take a video of different areas of the engine bay with my phone to try and locate the noise but I can only hear it from the cabin, with windows up and completely quiet (stereo/AC off). The ticks do seem to follow RPMs, but it's sort of hard to tell because it disappears once I hit around 2k rpm or so, and only creeps back when idle (around 1k rpm) It's been about a year since I got a valve adjustment... and being a dbw s2k, maybe the valves tightened back out of specs?

Here's another video, I basically took my phone and recorded the noise in the engine bay. I don't really hear anything out of the ordinary, but maybe you guys do...
In the meantime, I plan on checking the spark plug torque sometime this week, and maybe do a valve adjustment if time permits.

Unfortunately it's still there... It's intermittent and it's more pronounced/louder the colder it is outside I just swapped my OEM TCT with Billman's so it's not the TCT I'm gonna do a valve adjustment soon, as it's been a little over a year since the last adjustment and I want to know just how much tighter they've gotten (I have an 06 so I need to keep an eye on that per Billman)
