Default Ticking noise at around 3000-4000rpm

Hi All,

I have a problem with my 2000 model s2k. It has done 90,000kms, and only 30,000 kms on the new engine which was replaced by honda due to a technical fault.

The issue is that a ticking noise can be heard when driving anywhere between 2000-4000 rpm, generally under light acceleration load or when just sitting at between 40-60km/h. It is like a 'tick tick tick tick' noise that appears to be coming from the front of the car (rather than the rear, like diff or something like that). The ticking noise is about 3-4 ticks per second. It is not overly loud, you have to put the windows up and listen for it but it is definately present.

I thought it might be the valve tappets/clearances. I took it to honda as it was time for my scheduled 90K service, and the problem had only developed just before i was due to take it to service it so i waited a bit and drove it gently.

Honda said that the issue is with the gearbox, and it needs a rebuild. They didnt mention anything about the fact that its under warranty, i thought that my warranty didnt cover the gearbox, however after checking my warranty pamplet the warranty covers 'internal lubricated parts' of the gearbox.

Has anyone experienced issues like this before? The gearbox shifts ok so there is no issues apart from the fact that it makes this ticking noise. Would it be the timing chain tensioner?? I've read lots of posts regarding the chain tensioner and none of them described the problem that i have, more of a 'card in bike spokes' during idle, whereas my problem is not during idle, but during driving at light load/sitting at 40-60.

Would appreciate any info that can arm me before i go back to honda and try to make a warranty claim which i believe is in order. I have never mistreated the gearbox, as i said it shifts fine apart from the noise.

Thanks!!! : )

Have you checked your oil lately? Oil starvation can cause similar noises. It could still be the t. chain tesnioner, but if the dealer is willing to do a rebuilt on your tranny for free and you've got the time, let them. Just make sure they cover it all, including the wheel alignment after. Then when the ticking is still there afterwards, get them to do the tensioner.

also i have difficulty getting into first and reverse sometimes.
And under what circumstances would these "sometimes" be? There are certain conditions when getting into 1st and reverse can be very difficult if not impossible and be perfectly normal.

xviper - i always keep ontop of the oil checking it every week at least, i never let it get below 2 x's on the oil dipstick so its not lack of oil.

yes i agree with you, i'll let them rebuild the gearbox then see if the noise dissapears. who knows they might of used the mechanics stethoscope and found that the noise was coming from the gearbox. i'll take it down to em and get em to fix it up.

I believe there is a TSB relating to gearbox making noise when accelerating over 2000rpm on year 2000 s2k?
