I've only owned by s2k for a month or so. I have found that when I put the car into first gear (while at rest at a stop light), there's an odd thump sound. Is that normal? It sounds like something has dropped. It's not mental to metal contact or anything... just a "thump" or "thud"

It's normal. Most likely the mainshaft is being slowed down. If you push on your clutch and wait a couple seconds, and then put it into first gear, you won't feel/hear the thump because the mainshaft has already slowed down enough.

Most rwd cars do this. My wifes G35 does it as well as my S.
