Coilbinding will show as epoxy(paint) being chipped off the springs in an area where it could only be caused by the coils above and below. Initially this may manifest as slight discolorations in this area as the paint is slowly knocked away. Check for it midspring on a straightwound spring and in the higher rate regions of a progressive spring (will vary depending on how wound and definitely related to cost of manufacture). When this occurs midcorner the auto will feel suddenly loose as though there were no suspension - which effectively there isn't. It is a dangerous handling issue and more so from the perspective of the physical shocks being transmitted to the auto hardpoints. Way too many people run their autos way too low for the springrate and damper shaft length being run - and, unfortunately, many suspension vendors and manufacturers encourage this....
