Default Thrown Connecting Rod at 8,000 RPM

Hey everyone,

I have a 00 S2 and at 48,500 miles threw a con rod on a freeway on- ramp at 8000 rpm. It's a pretty spectacular 3 inch hole on the exhaust manifold side at number 3 cylinder.
Anyway, I was curious if anyone else has thrown a rod? My parts supplier told me that F20c blocks are in demand because of this exact situation. I'm a mechanic, and have checked the TSB's for any info. The only thing I could find was a part number for earlier (2000-01) blocks that were being phased out of production....For what reason the bulletin did not say. Along with that, a friend told me that early european spec s2000's were having oiling issues at sustained rpm (120 kph for more than an hour), and were being retofiited with an oiling kit. Anyone in europe heard of this? Since I have to rebuild the block, I would like to see if I could get that kit.

Thanks

NAF20C

P.S.
If anyone else has thrown a rod info of failure would be appreciated..../

The European TSB is for the oil jet bolts that hold and feed the sprayers under the piston. The early bolts have two holes, the newer 4.

The problem in Europe had to do with cylinder wall heat after excessive high RPM driving (read: autobahn/strada).

I doubt this is related to your issue as big end bearing and wrist pin lubrication/cooling is via the crank.

Here's a thread describing exactly this problem. The rod failed at 6,000 RPM with about 15,000 miles on the car. Honda disputed the warrantee claim, finally offering a "good faith" contribution of 50% towards the repairs.

I hope that you are able to repair the car soon and enjoy driving it again.

Thank you guys for the great info. I guess misery loves company... and I do feel alot better now.
Just to let you guys know I am building the block with AEBS sleeves, crower rods, and arias 11.6.1 pistons. My head is ported, polished with dual springs and ss valves, swirl polished and back cu with ti retainerst. I plan on 11,000 rpm if the tranny will take it. Thanks for the encouragement, I will let you guys know when she's up and running again.

For how long?

This engine is capable of much higher RPMs then the 9K limit, but I expect if you raised the redline to 10K some would fail real quick and all would have a substantially shortened life. Fine for racing, but not for everyone.

A built engine may well rev much higher but how long it would last, and if you feel you got your moneys worth is another question altogether.

WHY would your car have thrown a rod at less than 50K miles?

My 00' has 73K miles, and gets redlined repeatedly....
(in fact, just a little while ago she took out a new stang GT)

This makes me a little nervous.
I want 200K miles out of this S2000.

I pay 5 bucks a quart for mobil 1 synthetic, so that motor should last a while.
