for those of you who do their own oil changes
I changed my oil today and maybe its just me, but i only put 5 quarts in. I would put in 5.1 (the capacity according to the owners manaul) if mobil 1 sold a .1 quart bottle but as you know they don't. I normally just buy a 5 quart jug. I don't think .1 quarts makes really any difference. The oil level is well within the cross hatched area on the dipstick and I change my oil often (2 1/2 months and 1770 miles since last oil change in this case.) Am i the only one who only puts 5 quarts or do you guys/gals insist on that extra .1 quart?

You're really overthinking this one a bit, what? 0.1 qt. is nothing either way. If you're worried about having to open up another qt. to put 0.1 in, why or why not? It doesn't matter. If you're near full, leave it. Depending on how long I let it drain, I might need any where from 0.2 to 0.5 of another bottle. I leave the rest for topping up as the car uses it up. Whatever I have left in whatever bottle I happen to have left at the time of the next oil change gets dumped into the engine with the new oil.

I always use 5.5 quarts. I pour half of one bottle (keep the other half in the trunk for top off) into the first empty bottle and dump the rest in. I change filter every time I change oil. I let it drain until the first album is over and have to flip it over .

Like the others have said, just buy 6 litres, put 5 litres in and save the remaining Litre for topping off unless you're one of the rare that don't burn a drop of oil.

depending on the filter you use, you're safe with 5 then recheck oil level at first gas refill and top off when necessary. Be sure to check oil level 5 minutes have engine has been shut down and is warm (operating temp). Checking the level on a bone cold engine might reveal false info as some oil collects in pan and might show more.
