Third gear grind
Hey everyone,

I was driving home the other night came to a red light and decided to get on it when the the light turned green. The sound of my T1r single is specatacular(I picked it up about a month ago), so wonderful that I bounced off the revlimiter in second, only once. I was embarrassed and ashamed of my mis shift.
Shortly after that I noticed that when shifting from second to third it would grind. Only second to third, it does not grind from fourh to third.
I read some other peoples threads and from there I decided to change my tranny fluid, and also the clutch fluid. Took it for a spin and it still grinds but not as harsh.
So my questions are:
1. Is this a common thing to happen if you bounce off the rev limiter?
2. How do I fix this, replace only the problem area, or replace the tranny? I am able to remove myself but I have never been inside a tranny and would want to give it to a specialist.
3. Am I going to cause damage to any other gears by driving it this way? Reason I ask is because if Im going to drop the tranny I would like to be able to replace the clutch while I am in there and I would have to save some funds for that.
TIA

The clutch fluid is dot 3 or 4 brake fluid, there is a reservoir on the driver side firewall, that you bleed from the transmission. There is a write up online, but I'm on my cell so I cant repost it.

chances are you put a burr on the gear when you got excited by hitting the rev limiter. With the car turned off perform the shift from 2nd to third about 50 times and see if the burr can get smoothed up. If 50 times doesn't work then do 100, that is usually the prescription to get it fixed.
In addition to that my advice on getting a smoother shifting tranny involves the following:
New tranny fluid and new clutch fluid (which you have)
Extend the clutch rod to close up most of the clearance on it - simple 2 minute procedure.
Due the shifter lube TSB
Shift a bit slower performing each shift as a two-part motion rather than rowing through the gears quickly. Extending the clutch rod helps improve this aspect of shifting for the most part but try to avoid slamming into each gear as that is how you can get burrs on them.
Use a heavier shift knob (ala Moddiction, skunk2 etc...)
I think you can avoid opening up the tranny.
