No, I'm betting he snapped the spider bearings in the CV joints of the axles. I've had a few "repeat offender" customers of mine who have done this multiple times from launching the car. The spider bearings inside the CV cup are held onto a splined part of the axle shaft with a snap ring. High torque situations will spin the axle fast enough to where the tires can't break traction quick enough or are super grippy and cause the splined section to crack the corresponding splined section of the spider bearing assembly. The sound the OP described was those splines slipping and grinding against each other. Best way to describe the sound is a very loud coffee grinder.

Nope, simply because the splines have always been pretty well rounded over rendering the shaft and spider useless. I had one guy that decided he'd keep giving it gas because at times "it would move a little" and he ended up damaging his Torsen unit.

Where did you get the CV joint, if it was aftermarket thats your problem. Aftermarket axles are solid shafts and not hollow tube like OEM. Very poor quality. Theres a reason OEM are $800+ per side.
