doesn't some stainless have a very slight attraction to a magnet, much less than normal steel but still a slight amount, whereas titanium has no attraction at all. I swear that I've been able to pick up some stainless bolts that I've dropped into my engine bay using a magnetic pick-up tool. I would give it a try and see if there is a slight attraction to a magnet.
But even if they turn out to be titanium retainers you will still get a decent life out of them as long as you don't over-rev the engine, just get into the habit of inspecting them on a regular basis, maybe once per year ?

Stainless may certainly be magnetic. There are various types of stainless steel on the market. Ones with more iron content like the 400-series are magnetic where as the 300-series are not.
