Default Synthetic Oil Use

Anyone out there running synthetic oil in their S2000?
What brand, weight, and frequency of oil changes do
you recommend? I'm a firm believer in synthetic oil
and want to do the same in my 2003.

Most people on S2KI use synthetic oil. You should not change to synthetic for around 7500-10000 miles, or it will take longer to break in your engine. It will also use more oil. Most people agree that you should not do your first oil change until you hit 3500 miles, then change it with Mobil 0 Drive Clean (Conventional Oil). Do the same at 7000 miles.

Don't use anything other than 10W-30.

OK, I can't let this one go.. why do you suggest only 10W30?

I did not derive this on my own. I've read many threads on it, and I don't think I've seen anything else recommended. I've seen a lot of comments about 5W-30 being too thin, and a lot of comments about 15W-50 being too thick. I'm surprised that you disagree.

I made the statement just because dealerships and lube shops seem to make random recommendations that conflict with Honda's official recommendation (in the owners manual).

Honda has to make a recommendation so they pick a weight that is pretty good in all conditions for this engine. But if you think about how oil wieghts work and vary with temprature it is easy to recognize that different conditions will have a different ideal libricants. 10W30 is a nice compromise.. probably a little heavy in a Canadian winter, maybe on the light side under heavy loads in high heat. It is not magic and people that use other weights that are appropriate for conditions are doing OK.

As I've said before, we use NEO 0W-5 in all our vehicles. From BMW motorcycles to heavy equipment. I've done this for 20 years and the only benefits are great cold weather starting, cooler running in hot weather, better gas mileage, and longer change intervals. Arguing over SAE weights only shows that you are misinformed. There is no comparison at all between diester based synthetics and conventional petroleum or synthesised hydropcarbon oils (Mobil 1 is in the latter group).
