Synthetic Oil Burning More Than Conventional Oil?
Hey guys!
My car: MY00 55k miles
I just switched to synthetic (Mobil 1 Full Synthetic) recently and after about 600 miles I am burning/losing more oil than when I was still using conventional oil. Probably burned about half a quart already. When I was using conventional castrol gtx oil, I burned 2 quarts in 5000 miles. I check every week and the last time I checked (hot and cold), oil levels were normal.
I ALREADY KNOW that AP1s burn more oil than AP2s, but should it really be burning this much?
Also, I'm pretty sure my head gasket isn't blown, could be cracked? And no signs of performance loss either. Everything seems fine just the low(er) oil level.
Any ideas?
YES I:
-am using 10w30
-checked for leaks
-do not have white smoke coming out of my exhaust
-check the oil filter and it is still on tight
All my gaskets were still in tact when I checked them about 2000 miles ago while I was doing a valve adjustment, and no leaks at all anywhere.

If you run a search, you'll find endless debates about whether or not Mobil 1 burns rapidly in ap1's. Generally, people that use mobil 1 and it burns a lot can at least slightly improve their problem by switching to a different brand of synthetic oil. In these debates everyone will tell you their favorite brand.

i gotta admit after i switched from mobil 1 I burned MUCH less, for some reason mobil 1 and the F20s dont get along to well. Im running castrol edge 10w30 and have burned less than half a quart (400mL) in about 2.5k miles. Also, whoever said that people shouldnt be switching over to synthetic till you are over 75k must be smoking something real good, the things people say on the internet amazes me.

I suggest you do not use Mobil 1 "Synthetic". I used it for two years and was constantly burning 1.5-2 quarts every 4000-5000 miles. A few months ago, I tried Valvoline SynPower and burned less than a quart! My brother is currently trying Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic Oil and I'm trying Mobil 1 Extended Performance. I'm doing an oil change in the next few weeks, hopefully it didn't burn as much. Either way, I think I'm going to stick with Valvoline SynPower. It has received praise over at bobistheoilguy.com and you can't beat the price of $21 for a 5 quart jug from Walmart.

I would agree with that, but then there are those who stand by their mobil 1. I went from burning a quart every 700 miles (mobil 1) to not burning anything (Royal Purple) in my F20.
Yeah I always use full synthetic. At 47k as of now
