no it's not true. and it's been covered a lot as well as in the oil journals FAQ in the tech forum. use the search.

"Mobil 1" is ONLY synthetic. "Mobil" is a dino oil. Any name brand oil will be fine (Castrol, Valvoline, Penzoil, etc.).

I do not believe this to be necessarily true. Road Rage has indicated that any brand name non-synthetic oil is more than able to protect our engines as long as the recommended change interval is followed for your average daily driven car. Synthetics like Mobil 1 may have certain other characteristics that make it better for some types of driving conditions. It too, is more than adequate to protect our engines. Perhaps Redline has more additives to help it protect "longer" but not necessarily "better". And do you really want to go longer than the change interval required by Honda? You might need to make a warranty claim one day. You don't want them to know your change interval far exceeds what they require, regardless of what oil you have in there.
It's like life insurance. Do you want to be protected "more" by buying more insurance or is a lower amount good enough for you?

^^ makes total sense (said from the master himself) Always spend the extra $ for a brand-name.
The way i see it, if MOBIL1 is good enough for Porsche's, its good enough for my S. Porsche's by the way come filled from the factory with Mobil1 for those who dont know,as i used to work for the local Porsche/Audi dealer here.

Mobil 1 is recommended by Mercedes, and all cars and trucks filled from factory with Mobil 1. If it is good enough for Mercedes, it is more than good enough for my S.

Just a quick note: Honda does not recommend synthetics before 10,000 miles (16,000 km).

Once the engine is fully broken in you can switch to synthetic oil. There is no reason to wait to 10,000 miles if you want to go synthetic. I would probably break the engine in on the factory fill oil and avoid high rpm abuse. Then after 3,000 miles or so, you should be fine to go synthetic. So many myths surrounding oil and whether or not to go synthetic.
