When in reverse(goes in easily) and I release the clutch and get on the gas it makes a clunk noise
If it really did this, making the noise as you release the clutch its not the common clunck you get when you engage 1st or reverse after idling in neutral.

In neutral & engine running
Clutch in
Select 1st or reverse
Clunck = normal.

In neutral & engine running
Clutch in
Select 1st or reverse
Clutch out
Clunck = not normal.
If its not the axle "clunking" aka the axle nut thing its something else.

It happens as soon as the car goes to move. The gears inside the diff sound like they "bang" into action

I would stop driving and start checking it out.
There is a recent topic about a failed 4.77.
Don't start another "OMG! My diff failed" please.

i think its right.. well at least my diff does it also and i havent had any problems with it..

i thought u were right on until i went out in my car to make sure. you pop the gear in first or reverse.. u SLOWLY let go of the clutch, no gas needed.. the gear will rotate a few mm and catch.

if there was a problem with the gear (had anything to do with the diff at all) then it would be a constant clunk. sort of like a flat tire. the sound would get faster and louder as you accelerated.

what i would do is change the fluid in the diff.. watch the fluid coming out. chk for EXCESSIVE metal shavings. a little bit of metal is NORMAL.. im talking about enough to block the flow of the fluid coming out. enough where ur Magnetic bolt is covered in metal.

if the fluid runs out free and easy.. change the fluid and bolt up. this way you know when the last fluid change was at very least.

Ok cool. I just changed the fluid into it with royal purple 75w90 gear oil.

It makes the same noise when out of the car if you turn where the driveshaft connects to. Makes a little bang sound as the gears catch eachother and spin.
I think it is fine. No other noises at all in any gear while shifting or driving or anything. Not like a BANG noise more of just the gears connecting and meshing and sping the wheels I guess.
My 4.77's made the same noise out of the car when I would spin it by hand I think so I think what I am hearing is just the diff engaging from a stop.
