Styrofoam bumper support
What is the main purpose of the styrofoam support in back of the bumper? Is it just for impacts or that and something else?

You won't hurt anything...until you hit something (or they hit you). The foam is just there to help prevent the bumper cover from making contact with the metal bar that's the actual bumper. It helps spread the impact a bit and probably makes it harder for the metal bar to tear through the urethane.
