Hi,

Today I was trying to install a mugen header and while reinstalling, one of the studs that hold the header broke off..(as shown in the picture)






My question is..

1. Is it okay/safe to drive the car with the one stud broken as is ?

2. What's my best solution to fix this ?

I'd really appreciate your input.

None of your pictures are showing up for me.

If you can grab the stud with vise-grips, it should be easy to remove. If it is flush or inside the head, the best way to get it out is to TIG weld a nut onto it and back it out that way. I wouldn't bother with broken bolt removal kits. They all suck and take forever to not work...

I'm not good at welding, but was easily able to remove a broken valve cover stud from a brand new LS3 head. It welded dirty, but I kept going and was able to weld a nut on without any damage to the head.

I'm not sure how to get the pics working..but basically it's almost flush..

Should I even bother with the ez-out extractors or just take it to a mechanic ? How much do mechanics usually charge for these?

I can't weld so that's out of the option

Flush to what? the header? If so, remove the header, grab the stud and remove/replace it.

Good point. I guess I'll have the thickness of header to grab onto.

I really don't wanna screw this up..Any safe and sure, or recommended way of going about this ? Just vise grip and turn ? Should I use any PB blaster or liquid wrench ?

If it's flush with the header, remove the header, soak the stud with PB Blaster, and then use a vise wrench to remove it. Typically, they will come right out. If not, at least your mechanic would have something decent to weld onto.

For your situation, an extraction kit is probably the worst choice.

Got it. Will give it a shot. Supposing that I do get the stud out, is it simple to reinstall the new stud ? (anyone know part number by any chance ? I couldn't find it from the parts diagram on exhaust manifold of Honda) Does it just screw in ?

The stud will likely unscrew by hand, otherwise pliers. PBlaster will only help, but you probably wont need it. Reinstall is just as easy, screw in by hand.

Check out the part diagram for the Cylinder Head to find the stud PN (not the exhaust manifold). It appears to be # 90026-PT0-000

Yes it is threaded in.

Get a torque wrench while you're at it. Sounds like you over torqued it.
