Default Stripped Valve Cover Allen Bolt

I tried to use a non-metric allen key (big DUH) for the valve cover and managed to strip most of one of the bolts (the other 3 came out fine). Any ideas on how to get the damn thing off now. I tried metric but the damage was already done.

It'd be a no brainer if they weren't recessed as they are

Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks!

chudc;

Assuming the 'socket' in the cap screw is just rounded out, you could try a number 3 or 4 "EZ out" for the valve cover screws. The smaller sparkplug cover screws would probably take a #2.

Looks like a tapered bolt with reverse spiral flutes. The flutes grab the rounded hole when you 'lefty loosey'. In these sizes they are short (~$3.00) money.

Because the EZ outs are tapered, you may need to try more than one size so it just fits inside of the head.

Good luck

Or get a SMALL grinding bit from a dremel tool and cut horizontally and use a regulare screw driver.

Be cautious with the Sears Screw-Out. I have used these and they will actually drill out the screw head. You might be better off to get a standard screw extractor. Those don't "drill" as effectively as the Screw-Outs do. Once the extractor has locked itself in, you must use a sharp twist to "snap" the bolt loose. I'm sure you have alread noticed the other 3 bolts came out better with a snap. This is due to the Galvanic adhesion of the bolt head to the plug cover. Once you snap it, it will come out easily.

As they are recessed you can't grind them.

I did this the first time I removed the spark plug cover. The solution was to drill out the head of the hex bolt with a drill bit that fits inside the burred hole. You only drill a little bit until the head breaks off.

Then, when you remove the cover the shank is easy to remove as there is no tension on it.

I have the same problem.

Where can I get EZ-out? Shoudl I try EZ-out or a standard screw extractor first?

Thx

Night;

EZ outs are hand tools most often found near taps and dies.

You may be able to find single pieces, but you are more likely to find small sets, with a range of sizes.
