Default Stripped out a rear driveshaft bolt.

I stripped out a driveshaft bolt during the deconstruction phase of a clutch install. Its in the rear. Can I just drop the front of the driveshaft and leave the rear part connected?? Its my first clutch job on this car. I'm taking it day by day, as Its a pretty big winter project so hurrying the job isn't an issue. If I need to get it out I am assuming that drilling it out is the only way?? Thanks for any advice.

Why in the hell did honda use a 6mm hex in these instead of something more user friendly..

cut the head off with a grinder and cutting disc. Once you get the front loose, you can pull the driveshaft off of the cut bolt. Getting the transmission off will be much easier with the driveshaft completely out of there rather than hanging.

I just finished removing the transmission myself about 1 hour ago. I tried with the rear of the driveshaft attached but it makes it much more difficult.

Take a pair of visegrips and grab onto the screw as tight as you can and it should come off. If that doesnt work you can do what SC says and cut the head off, but the visegrip should work.

Yea I tried the vicegrip thing and it rounded the outside off aswell. Its in there with some serious torque. 2001 and has never been removed. I tried with a 6mm hex 20inch 1/2inch drive extension and a breaker bar and it didn't budge. gonna have to pick up a disc grinder tomorrow and cut the head off. Thanks for the advice guys.

This is a common issue for our AP1 cars that is why in 2004 they started using a 10 mm screw with 8 mm size socket head.

I am making up a quick change kit for both the AP1 and AP2 cars that will fix this issue and make it easy to remove and install a rear diff DIY.
The kit has all cryo treated grade 12.9 hardware to replace the grade 8 and grade 5 the car comes with from the factory.

Shoot me a PM I can send you a factory replacement socket head screw free of charge for the one you striped out

gonna have to pick up a disc grinder tomorrow and cut the head off.
Be very VERY carefull not to grind into the CV itself.
IOW don't go too far towards the center.

STOP!!! Dont grind it! Thats waay more work than its worth. I've taken my tranny out 4 times and eventually stripped all of them. Replaced them with grade 8 hex heads.

But anyways the weird washer that is in there behind them can be your friend. I couldnt get one out with vise grips either. So this is what I did, take a large screwdriver and pry on the washer they have behind the bolt. I pryed the washer out (with the help of a hammer), until it was about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch away from the shaft and that loosened the bolt enough that the vise grips worked easily.

Well im not 100 percent that this will work for you but it has for me, twice.

Good luck!!!!

That's an interesting trick, but if the head is already stripped and you can't re-use the bolt anyway... just cut the sucker off. Ten seconds with a grinder is hardly 'waay more work'.
