So i brought the car in for the infamous card in the spokes noise that the tensioner makes when it goes bad. I was told that the timing chain was stretched and that it was not the tensioner. They replaced everything at the tune of 1300. Any ideas on this, perhaps everyone who is having constant tensioner noise may have a stretched chain as well?

Its a very well put together chain for it to be stretched. Of course it would be easy for the stealership to say you have a bad chain and turn it from a 1 hour job to a 10+ hour job. Did you get the chain back from them?? I wonder if there is a way of measuring the actual chain to see if it is out of spec.

I've always thought a stretched cam chain was a possible cause for this, but everyone insists that it just can't happen. If I ever have my engine out (or at least have the head off again), I intend to measure the extension of the tensioner with my current chain, and then measure it with a new chain and see if it's the same.

It just seems odd to me that some cars don't have problems for 100K miles, but others have to replace the tensioner every 5K like clockwork.

Alternatively, I'd like to see someone with the TCT sound try to replace just the chain and see if that resolves the issue. But that would be a cumbersome experiment.

I've put TCTs in 05 s2ks with 8k miles. The chain is not stretched.

First off, demand your money back.

Did they replace the TCT as well?

I really doubt it. A "stretched" chain is when the pins of the chain get worn and the average link-to-link length increases. With a constantly lubed chain like the one in the S2000, I would expect the chain to last the life of the engine. At the very least I would insist on seeing this stretched chain measured before my eyes.
