Default Strange noise from transmission

Ok so I am looking at a 2001 S2000 with a little over 42000 miles on it. Everything seems fine with the car minus a strange noise coming from the transmission when decelerating in gear. It mainly does it when the car is at lower RPM's. I know that the clutch is the stock one so I am thinking that it just needs a new clutch. When you start to decelerate when you push the clutch in it stops, then when you release the clutch, in gear only, it starts again. The noise is like a humming noise.

Any help would be VERY appreciated. THANKS

If you mean a buzzing type of noise coming from the radio area when letting off the gas (2500-4000 rpms) then it's clutch buzz. Very common. A new disc will 85% fix the problem for good.

so its common? I guess never driving a S2K before and going to buy one wasnt such a good idea. I am going to drive a few more over the next week to find the exact one I want so hopefully I will start to learn what is normal and not.

Also I got someone form the boards coming to look at the one with the clutch "buzz" on friday.

THANKS for the information and if anyone have anything else to add please keep the information rolling.

All 00-01 cars with an original clutch will have the decel buzz. MY02's and later have the improved quieter disc.

i have a MY01 with similar mileage on it. the buzz doesn't affect performance, and it doesn't mean you need a new clutch. however, it is a good idea to check if the clutch is beginning to slip under load.

I've got to at least partially disagree with this statement. If the car sounds like a poorly-built piece of crap like mine did, then you need a new clutch disk. And my '00 sounded like a #$%ing Yugo when I let off the gas. Piss-poor build quality is piss-poor build quality. Fortunately, a $125 disk will fix the noise, if the rest of the parts aren't worn.
