Can someone tell me exactly what the problem usually is when you say the diff? Is it a bearing or is it the gears, or what?.. Sorry to disturb your thread..

heard from repair shop, definitely the diff. He doesn't even want to fix it.. he told me to take it to the dealership.

Would now be a good time to consider a shorter final drive gear?
i would say so.

I took my car to my local mechanic, whom I trust a lot. They heard the noise while driving, inspected thoroughly the underside of the car, and ran the car on the lift to pinpoint the exact location of the sound.

He said it's definitely coming from within the pumpkin. My aftermarket warranty place has dispatched a guy to go to my mechanic. We shall see where that leads. Technically this issue should be covered. I'm expecting some sort of ridiculous loophole to be invoked.. I'll keep you guys updated.

Aftermarket warranty guy saw it, my mechanic explained the situation, very cut and dry. They are sending a replacement diff within a day or 2 and I'm fully covered.

THANK GOD for that aftermarket warranty. I'll end up only having to pay a $100 deductible.

After searching for the past 3 hours, I have found this thread. dogas, your symptoms match my symptoms word for word.

I have had this "card in a bike spoke" noise for a few weeks now. The thing is though, I just purchased my S in March; do you know what caused your diff to go?

How loud would you say the noise is? I can only hear mine with the radio off, windows up.

Were there any other symptoms indicating that your diff blew? I'm not sure if this is relevant, but a few weeks ago while cruising on the highway I heard a loud clanking sound from the rear, but I excused this to be a rock under the car.

I am hoping my diff is fine, I did not purchase the car with a warranty. I don't know what would have caused it to go, I have done nothing but baby my car for the short time I've had it. Another member of the forum even checked everything over for me before I purchased it.
