steering rack & accident
hi guys,
i got into an accident last week, i spun out and hit a tree.
it wasnt that fast on impact so i did a bit of fender damage, however the side of the wheel took the brunt of the impact. so now besides the fact that one wheel is a liite more turned than the other, it feels like there is no power steering when i turn the last final rotation right. turning left is like normal.
i checked the wheel and it is not bent.
all the control arms seem to be straight, subframe hasnt moved.
there is a contant grinding noise from what seems like the inside of the black canister from the steering rack.
i pulled it out and saw no cracks and the "worm" looks fine.
from what i gather i think if i replace the entire unit i should be fine.
does this seem like im doing the right thing?
thanks
mike

Ill bet the bank you bent the worm gear that extends out of the rack.
raise the front, and turn the wheels side to side with the carr off. If you feel binding, you screwed up the rack.
A rack is very expensive....you are welcome to send it to me, and I will fix it wont be the first time Ive repaired a bent s2k rack.

I'm about to swap out my rack, which has been pulling sharply to the right after a fender bender some time ago. It has been re-aligned a couple times so I know that is not the issue. The steering wheel will actually rotate to the right when the car is started while up on the rack... good.
The goood thing is that I found a used rack for a good price but am now looking for a DIY swap procedure. Anyone have a place I can find it. I'm plenty handy with tools but haven't had to tackle this one yet.
