i am getting this in REALLY HOT weather...
billman? anyone know what this is...
people are saying not the TCT and not the STARTER...so i'm clueless.
do i just live with it? without knowing what it is...i don't know if there are potential ramifications of not fixing it...
has anyone asked HONDA about it, either through warranty or otherwise?
is woodwork still around?

I have the same problem too. It started last winter when weather was cold in the morning, but in the afternoon it's all right (so it's temperature related). I didn't pay much attention to it until currently it happen much more frequently. and I start wonder why. After reading this thread, I still confuse about what goes wrong. Is it starter problem or timing belt tensioner problem??

I changed my TCT thinking it was the problem but suer enough it still happens. I talked to a mechanic at honda and he said that the starter gear spring is probably worn out and thus not retracting in time. When the motor is warm the heat probably is loosening up the spring which is why it ussually happens on cold starts. I am going to change my starter soon to see if thats the problem and hopefully my flywheel isnt damaged to bad. Either case we should get to the bottom of this I have 56k on my car now so it seems to be happenening around there and its a 00 From my experience its not the TCT

man its not a TCT. People are way too Timing chain tensioner happy these days...the slightest noise and 'oh its the TCT....'
Sounds like your starter motor squealing. Starter motors are not cheap (in australia $1200AUD). The starter motor is also not easy to get to. MY starter motor started making a squealing noise after i had a clutch job done, turned out they had not bolted the starter motor on again properly which left a bit of play.
Get the starter motor taken out and greased up and put back on again properly. This will hopefully alleviate your problem. If it does not then you are up for a new starter.
The starter motor noise can be characterised as a squealing noise that occurs right after the car has been started, and lasts for a second or two then goes away. Happens more prevalently when the car is cold. Can dissapear for a while then come back. Doesn't really do much damage as long as you get it fixed relatively soon before the starter motor teeth get worn down.
Can you try and record the noise? Wait till tomorrow morning, put your phone on record, sit it next to the engine bay on a stand of some sort (few boxes, whatever) and record the noise and post it up.

thanks.
do you know exactly how to fix the starter...is it as simple as applying grease on it?
what exactly do we grease up?
thanks in advance.
