Mine is a 2000 with 54k miles. Started like 10k miles ago. It happened often when it was cold. It randomly happens but I just got a used starter with low miles. Gonna swap it out and see if it works.

hey guys, i just did alot of reading on this topic, it turns out it's not even starter related.

it's the timing chain tensioner(130 bucks) and it has a record for failing rather soon.

repeat: not the starter

so if you have this problem, every time the starter stays on for longer than it should, is it causing damage? mine only does it every once in a while. every time when it was cold, every once in a while now that it's hot.
and it happen less if you have fresh oil in the car, no?

mine is starting to do that around 100k, it happen way less after i change my oil for some reason.

jyeung528, from what you described I had the same problem when the cold season started last fall. I did a search and got basically the same answer, that it happeans in cold weather. For a while there it drove me nuts, I was thinking it had to be something else since it sounded so bad. It is now, spring.....the noise is gone now. I can only say the cold weather had something to do with it. Sorry, if I wasnt any help.

its not the tct ive changed mine thinking it was the cause and it still makes the noise occasionally on cold startups. I think it has something to do with the starter not disengaging properlly or a bad ground somewhere on the engine start button that may be telling the starter to stay engaged longer than it should be... not the TCT from my experience

I have this problem too. Tried the TCT and no luck. Then I tried the starter with no luck either. My old starter looked fine too. It happens very rarely in the summer but once a week in the winter time.
