Maybe the starter motor not disengaging right away after the car starts.

If you haven't figured this one out yet, I would opt for the starter pinion gear not completely disenguaging. Howmany ,miles on the car?
the flywheel teeth could be part of this problem too. I haven't had to do any real work on my s2k yet so i dont know if its a bear to yank the starter and examine things and carefully put a very small amount of hitemp grease on the throughout setup. a real small amount so as not to get anything on the clutch. Turn the motor over and examine all the flywheel teeth you can usally walk the flywheel arround with a big screwdriver or have an assistant turn the crank pulley. helps to pull the plugs.
hope some of this helps.

thanks.
sounds like there is a possible solution.
i will just leave it alone, since it happens infrequently.
but i do get peace of mind knowing its just the starter...

yea, i didn't believe my starter was the cause till after i replaced the TCT. although it definitely sounded like a starter, everyone was ranting about TCT issues, so I immediately jumped to conclusions.
mine only makes noise in cold weather, and it started happening more frequently (in cold weather) since i had a new clutch/flywheel installed. i don't think it's a big deal but someone posted that it could damage the teeth on either the flywheel or starter. any opinions on this?

so if you have this problem, every time the starter stays on for longer than it should, is it causing damage? mine only does it every once in a while. every time when it was cold, every once in a while now that it's hot.
