Default Startup Noise - metal crunching

About once a month, when I start my car...it will startup and is immediately followed by a:

"CRRRREEEECHH-CRRREEEEECH"

sounds like metal crunching. almost like a MILD, softer 2nd gear grind.

I do not think it is the TCT because I do not have ANY cards in bicycle spokes or rumbling bees noise at idle, nor on acceleration.

Does anyone know what this noise is?

Thanks,

Happens while cranking the engine? Or after the engine has fired and is running on its own?

I can think of three things.

1) in a previous thread you mention that your secondary air injection pump only comes on for one second and then goes off. This is a problem and could be causing the noise you describe

2) starting the car with the A/C on could cause a noise like this as the compressor kicks on for the first time

3) if the noise only happens on the first cold start of the day, usually during colder weather, then it could be the starter over run noise that many people (including myself) have reported with the car. There appears to be no solution to the starter noise at this time.

while cranking the engine...right after it cranks and fires up...it's like:

cher cher cher cher vvrroomCRRREEENCHH-CRRREENCH.

1 - hmmm...i wonder how the air pump would cause this noise.

2 - A/C is always off when starting the car.

3 - it happens about once every 3 weeks. but starter over-run noise sounds like that is what it is.

i apologize i didn't find this in a search function, but thanks for bringing up that it is common with no solution.

i just want to be sure it is not any type of damage.

i suppose i am assured.

maybe check your belts? or perhaps your pulleys are not turning smoothly? in particular your tensioner pulley. i don't have any experience with the S but on many other cars i have worked with i have heard a sound similar to what you are describing and it turned out to be the tensioner. just throwing out some ideas as its hard to diagnose on the computer. does this noise happen continually? or is it a one time when you start it thing?

shet man...now you got me concerned again. i would LIKE to think it is just the common starter over run noise that other people have, which doesn't sound like a serious problem.

what to check for on the belts and tensioner pulley?

this happens ONCE when i start the car...and even so, only happens every 3 weeks.

Maybe the starter motor not disengaging right away after the car starts.
